A leading Australian airline based in Sydney. Founded in 1920 as a special company fully funded by the government. Routes to Singapore and the UK were opened in the 1930s. The airline began flying to Japan in 1952. In 1995, it went public and became fully privatised. British Airways holds a 21% stake. The main route is Sydney to London, and in recent years the airline has also been focusing on routes to Asia and America. Sales for the fiscal year ending June 2011 were $14.8 billion.
