Oulu (English spelling)

Oulu (English spelling)
The capital of Oulu County in central Finland. It is located at the mouth of the Oulu River, which flows into the Gulf of Bothnia. It prospered as a trading center from the Middle Ages, and was granted royal charter as a city in 1610. It was destroyed by a fire in 1822 and temporarily fell into ruin, but it continued to function as a commercial port and monopolized the export of wood tar. In the second half of the 19th century, it once again became one of Finland's leading commercial centers. The Crimean War and World War II paralyzed the port's functions, but this actually served as an opportunity to modernize the port facilities. Currently, industrial activity is active, with lumber and cellulose processing, shipbuilding, flour milling, fishing, and leather processing thriving. The rapids that run through the city are used for hydroelectric power generation, making it an ideal location for industry, centered on the provincial capital, Oulu. It is a major transportation center in northern and central Finland. It is home to the world's northernmost comprehensive university, which was founded in 1959. Population: 102,032 (1992 estimate).
