Caruso

Italian tenor, also known as Caruso. He studied vocal music in his native Naples, and made his debut at the Teatro Nuovo in the same city in 1895. Since then he achieved great success in various places, and in 1902 he achieved worldwide fame with his performance in Rigoletto at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. From 1903 to 1920 he was active at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, and built a golden age under the direction of its principal conductor Toscanini. His singing style is said to be the epitome of bel canto, and he is still talked about today as the ideal tenor for Italian opera. Along with Chaliapin, he is also known as a singer who made one of the first record recordings in the early 20th century. He was also a master of caricatures. イタリアのテノール歌手。カルーソーともいう。生地ナポリで声楽を学び，1895年同地のテアトロ・ヌオーボでデビュー。以来各地で大成功を収め，1902年ロンドンのコベント・ガーデン王立歌劇場での《リゴレット》で世界的名声を獲得。1903年−1920年ニューヨークのメトロポリタン歌劇場で活躍し，首席指揮者トスカニーニのもとで黄金時代を築いた。その唱法はベル・カントの典型といわれ，今なおイタリア・オペラ理想のテノール像として語り継がれている。シャリアピンとともに，20世紀初頭に最初期のレコード録音を行った歌手としても知られる。戯画の名手でもあった。生地ナポリで死去。→ジョルダーノ／デル・モナコ
