A city in southwestern Gujarat state, western India. It is the administrative capital of Jamnagar district. It is located about 70 km west of Rajkot, near the Gulf of Kutch. It was once the capital of the former Nawanagar princely state. The old city was founded by Jam Raval in 1540 and is surrounded by a fort built in 1788. In contrast, the new city is a modern city with wide streets and parks, and has industries such as cement, metal tools, textiles, and salt production. Population: 325,475 (1991).
