The capital of the Drôme department in southeastern France. Population 65,000 (1990). The town is located on a terrace on the left bank of the Rhône River, near the confluence with the Isère River. It has been a key transportation hub since Roman times, as it is on one of the main routes across the Alps, passing through Grenoble, upstream of the Isère River. Currently, it is a distribution center for agricultural products along the Rhône River, and is home to the jewelry and metal industries.
