A condition in which intestinal motility is weakened or stops after abdominal surgery. This is particularly noticeable in surgeries in which intraperitoneal organs are directly manipulated. Intestinal paralysis may be caused by the effects of drugs used in general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia, but it is thought to be mainly due to mechanical stimulation of the intestines during abdominal surgery (traction, compression, cutting, suturing, etc.) that damages the nerve tissue in the intestinal wall related to intestinal motility. Excessive changes in humidity, such as drying or wetting of the intestinal wall, can also cause damage to the nerve tissue. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
