Pedro de Valdivia

…On the Pacific coast about 100 km to the west is the port of Valparaiso, the largest in Chile. It was built in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia (1497-1553), and the first fortress was placed on the Santa Lucia hill. The city has a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and winter rainfall in June and July (350 mm per year).
