〘Noun〙① The finger on the hand or foot that is located on the innermost side when viewed from the back of the hand and is the thickest. Thumb. Big finger. (2) Oyayubi can be seen from the Genroku period ( 1688-1704 ), but Ohoyubi still has a strong influence, and even in the Setsuyoshurui, there are many readings with Ohoyubi. In the Shogenjiko Setsuyoshu, the readings for "苇" are "Ohoyubi" on the right and "Oyayubi" on the left. There was probably a sense at the time that Ohoyubi was correct. In the Meiji period, Oyayubi came to overwhelm Ohoyubi.

〘名〙① 手足の指で、甲の側から見て最も内側に位置し、最も太い指。拇指(ぼし)。おおゆび。おゆび。※俳諧・小町踊（1665）春「えとを先づくる親ゆひよ年の春〈親十〉」② (親指で表わすところから) 主人、亭主、親方、旦那、また、頭立つ者などをいう。※雑俳・柳多留拾遺（1801）巻一四上「親ゆびの次にうる雲小むらさき」[語誌](1)古くはオホオヨビ。一二世紀頃にオホユビとなり、近世まで親指の呼称の中心的なものとして使用されている。
(2)オヤユビは元祿時代頃（一六八八‐一七〇四）から例が見えるが、オホユビの勢力も依然強く、節用集類でもオホユビの訓のものが多い。「書言字考節用集」では、「拇」に対し右に「オホユビ」、左に「オヤユビ」と訓を付している。おそらく、当時としてはオホユビを正しいとする意識があったのであろう。明治になって、オヤユビがオホユビを圧倒する。
