Maḥmūd al‐Kāshgharī

A Turkic scholar from Kashgar in Central Asia in the 11th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. Also known as Kashgari. He wrote the world's first Turkic dictionary, Dīwan lughāt al‐Turk, in Baghdad around 1078. It is a Turkic-Arabic dictionary that uses Arabic to explain words from 11th-century Turkic dialects, but in addition to general words, it also includes tribal names, place names, personal names, official titles, poems, proverbs, and so on, making it an encyclopedia-like dictionary. It is a first-class historical resource for studying the language, history, geography, literature, and society of 11th-century Turkic peoples.

11世紀，中央アジアのカシュガル出身のトルコ学者。生没年不詳。カシュガリーとも呼ばれる。1078年ころ，バグダードで世界最初の《チュルク語辞典Dīwān lughāt al‐Turk》を著す。11世紀のチュルク語諸方言の単語を，アラビア語を用いて説明したチュルク語･アラビア語辞典であるが，一般的な単語のほかに，部族名，地名，人名，官職名，詩，諺などをも収録して，百科事典的な役割をも果たす。11世紀トルコ系諸民族の言語，歴史，地理，文学，社会を研究するための第一級史料である。
