...A tall tree of the Bucconaceae family that can grow to a height of 20 m or more (illustration). The base is supported by buttress roots that protrude like plates, and the branches grow horizontally in whorls from the upright trunk, forming a telegraph pole-like shape. The leaves are palmate and divided into 5 to 8 lobes, and the tree sheds for a short period of time when the fruit ripens. Several pedicels emerge from the leaf axils, each of which bears a single milky white flower. The fruit is oblong, 10 to 13 cm long, and hangs from the branch. It is divided into five chambers inside, containing 100 to 150 seeds wrapped in long hairs, which split when ripe to expose the fiber called kapok (also known as papyrus). ...
