Japanese: 冠位 - かんい
Crown rank - Kan'i
〘Noun〙① Crown and rank. ② Rank indicated by crown . In the 11th year of the reign of Empress Suiko ( 603 ), the system of crowns and ranks was first established, divided into 12 ranks (large and small crowns of virtue, benevolence, courtesy, faith, righteousness, and wisdom), and the crowns and clothing were differentiated by color (shades of purple, blue, red, yellow, white, and black). In the 14th year of the reign of Emperor Tenmu ( 685 ), there were 12 ranks for princes and kings, and 48 ranks for ministers. ※Nihon Shoki (720), December, 11th year of the reign of Suiko: "At the start of the two crowns and one rank, great virtue and small virtue〈abbreviated〉 great wisdom and small wisdom, together with 12 ranks, the two same colors were sewn together ."
