Mahāvaṁsa (English spelling)

Japanese: マハーバンサ（英語表記）Mahāvaṁsa

A historical book of ancient Sri Lanka. It is translated as "Great History" or "Great Kings' History". It is said to have been written by the monk Mahānāma in the late 5th century. It describes the history of Buddhism, from its establishment by the Buddha to its development in India up to the time of Ashoka, and its development in Sri Lanka up to the time of King Mahasena (reigned 334-362) in the mid-4th century. While dealing with the same theme as "Dīpāvaṇḍās (History of the Island)", it clarifies the origins of Sri Lankan Buddhism based on many different traditions. Sequels to this book were written by Dhammakitti in the 13th century and later people, covering the history up to the time of the British conquest in the early 19th century.

古代スリランカの史書。『大史』あるいは『大王統史』と訳される。5世紀末の修行僧マハーナーマ Mahānāmaの著作といわれる。仏教がブッダによって開かれてインドでアショーカのときまで発展した歴史と，それがスリランカに伝わって4世紀中頃のマハーセーナ王 (在位 334～362) のときまで展開した歴史を述べる。『ディーパバンサ (島史) 』と同じテーマを扱いながら，異なった多くの伝承に拠って，スリランカ仏教の由来を正した。この書の続編は 13世紀のダンマキッティやその後の人々によって，19世紀初めイギリスに征服されるまでの歴史が書き続けられた。
