An insect of the genus Akame in the family Odonata of the order Odonata of the class Insecta. It is the most common dragonfly in Japan, and the term Akatombo generally refers to this species. It is about 4 centimeters long, emerges at the end of June, migrates to highlands, and then migrates to plains in autumn.

昆虫綱トンボ目トンボ科のアカネ属の昆虫。日本にもっとも普通にみられるトンボで、一般にアカトンボというときにはこの種をさす。体長約4センチメートルで、6月末ごろに羽化し、いったん高地へ移り、秋には平地に移動する。
