Battle of Aonogahara

Japanese: 青野ヶ原の戦 - あおのがはらのたたかい

In 1338 (Engen 3/Ryakuo 1), the Southern Court army of Kitabatake Akiie marched westward, and the Ashikaga Shogunate army tried to defend against it, in a battle at Aonogahara in Fuwa County, Mino Province (present-day Aono-cho, Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture). In an attempt to recover from the Southern Court's disadvantage, Akiie left Reizan Castle in Mutsu in August of the previous year and set off again on his way westward, briefly occupying Kamakura at the end of December, and in January defeating the Ashikaga army on the Tokaido before entering Mino. Ashikaga Takauji and Tadayoshi dispatched Takashi Morofuyu and then Takashi Moroyasu to ambush Akiie's army along with Mino Shugo Toki Yorito and others.

1338年(延元3∥暦応1)西上する北畠顕家の南朝軍とこれを防ごうとした足利幕府軍との，美濃国不破郡青野ヶ原(現，岐阜県大垣市青野町)における合戦。劣勢となった南朝方の挽回を図った顕家は，前年8月陸奥の霊山城を発して再び西上の途につき，12月末いったん鎌倉を占拠し，1月には東海道の足利方を連破して美濃に入った。足利尊氏･直義は高師冬ついで高師泰らを派し，美濃守護土岐頼遠らとともに顕家軍を要撃させた。
