A Russian ethnic headgear for women, worn in any season. It is usually a square piece of cloth or knitted fabric worn on the head, over the shoulders, or wrapped around the neck. Bright floral patterns in primary colors are popular. Although it is an ethnic headgear, it was only after the mid-19th century, when mass production by machine began, that it became widely used. Since then, it has come to be widely used among the general public, including farmers and merchants, replacing traditional headgear. While the platok was worn casually on a daily basis by the general public, it was also used as a dowry or reward for matchmakers at weddings, and for brides, it was a symbol of farewell to their girlhood, and was to be thrown away on the way to the wedding or left at their parents' home.
