Ashikaga Tadafuyu

Ashikaga Tadafuyu
[raw]?
[Died] Motonaka 4 = Kakei 1 (1387).7.2.
A military commander during the Nanboku-cho period. Son of Takauji and adopted by his uncle Tadayoshi. As he was the son of a concubine, he entered Tosho-ji Temple at a young age and became a kakshiki (a priest), but in 1338 he sought the help of Tadayoshi and took the name Tadafuyu. When war broke out in Kii, Takauji appointed Tadafuyu to the position of Sahyoe-no-suke and had him defeat the warlord as a general. After the war, he was made a Junior Fourth Rank and Miyauchi Daifu. In April 1349, he was appointed as Nagato Tandai in Tomo in Bingo. Around this time, Tadayoshi came into conflict with Takauji's steward Takanobu Moronao, and eventually there was a rift between Tadayoshi and Takauji, so Tadafuyu, a member of Tadayoshi's party, was attacked by Takauji's army in September and fled to Higo in Kyushu. However, with the cooperation of the Shoni and Otomo clans in northern Kyushu, Takauji became a powerful force, and in June 1850 (Shohei 5, Kan'o 1, (50)), he sent a punitive force, and in October, Takauji himself went to Kyoto to pursue Tadafuyu. However, Tadayoshi raised an army in the meantime, so Takauji quickly sent his troops back. The following year, a peace treaty was concluded between Takauji and Tadayoshi, and Tadayoshi became the Chinzei Tandai (Kyushu Tandai), from which point he expanded his influence in northern Kyushu and the western part of the Chugoku region. However, in September, there was again discord, and in February 1852 (Shohei 7, Bunwa 1, (52)), Tadayoshi was poisoned to death by Takauji, and Tadafuyu was chased out of Kyushu by Takauji's supporter, Isshiki Noriuji (Doyu), and fled to Nagato, where he submitted to the Southern Court in November. The Southern Court appointed Tadafuyu as the general pursuer. In May of the 9th year of the Shohei Era (Bunwa 3, 54), he marched east together with Yamana Tokiuji, a powerful man in Sanin, and approached Kyoto. Takauji fled to Omi accompanied by Emperor Go-Kogon, and Tadafuyu was able to enter Kyoto without difficulty the following New Year. However, Takauji and his son Yoshiakira attacked Tadafuyu from both the east and west, and about two months later he was defeated and fled to the west. In the 17th year of the Shohei Era (Seiji 1, 62), when the Ouchi clans of Suo and the Yamana clans of Sanin submitted to Takauji, Tadafuyu fled from Bingo to Iwami, losing all his power.
