After gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire (1830), there were two wars between Greece, which sought to recover lost territories from the former Byzantine Empire, and Turkey, which sought to defend its own territory. (1) Since the 1860s, Greece had taken advantage of repeated rebellions by Greek residents of Crete, who sought annexation to mainland Greece, and sent troops to Crete in February 1897. In April of that year, the Ottoman Empire declared war on Greece and defeated the Greek army, and a ceasefire was established in May with the mediation of six countries: Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Austria, and Italy.
