A perennial plant of the lily family (APG classification: Liliaceae). The stems that grow upright from underground bulbs are thick, round, 2-3.5 cm in diameter, green, and about 1 meter tall. Several leaves grow in clusters in the middle of the stem, with stalks at the base, about 20 cm long, and ovate-cordate. The upper leaves are small and scale-like. In July and August, several flowers grow horizontally at the top of the stem. The flowers are tubular, do not open, green-white, 7-12 cm long. The capsules are elliptical, and produce many thin, winged seeds. They grow in the shade of evergreen forests in the Kanto region and west of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The Oobayuri variety is larger than Ubayuri and produces more flowers. The flowers are larger than Ubayuri, 9-13 cm. It grows in deciduous forests in northern and central Honshu, from Hokkaido to the southern Kuril Islands, and Sakhalin.
