1845‐1918 A pioneer of modern French geography. He studied history and geography at the École Normale Supérieure, traveled extensively around the Mediterranean, witnessed the opening of the Suez Canal (1869), and became familiar with the geography of A. von Humboldt and K. Ritter. He visited Germany to teach geography at the University of Nancy (1872), where he came into contact with O. Peschel and F. von Richthofen, and later turned his attention to F. Ratzel, absorbing and criticizing their works to establish his own unique style of geography. After 1877, he was active as a professor at his alma mater.
