Paul Vidal de la Blache

A pioneer of modern French geography. He studied history and geography at the École Normale Supérieure, traveled extensively around the Mediterranean, witnessed the opening of the Suez Canal (1869), and became familiar with the geography of A. von Humboldt and K. Ritter. He visited Germany to teach geography at the University of Nancy (1872), where he came into contact with O. Peschel and F. von Richthofen, and later turned his attention to F. Ratzel, absorbing and criticizing their works to establish his own unique style of geography. After 1877, he was active as a professor at his alma mater.

フランスの近代地理学の建設者。エコール･ノルマル･シュペリウールで歴史と地理を学び，地中海周辺を広く旅行しスエズ運河の開通(1869)を目にして，A.vonフンボルトやK.リッターの地理学に親しんだ。ナンシー大学で地理学を担当する(1872)ためドイツを訪ね，O.ペシェル，F.vonリヒトホーフェンに接し，のちにF.ラッツェルにも関心を向け，彼らを吸収･批判して独自の地理学を確立する。1877年以後は母校の教授として活躍した。
