American film. 1948. Directed by John Huston. A masterpiece of the so-called "effort goes to waste" type of adventure story, which was Huston's specialty. Three Americans (Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt (1919-1973), and Walter Huston (1884-1950)) discover gold dust after a hard time in the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico, but they become obsessed with possessiveness and suspicion, and end up losing everything. Director Huston portrays this with a rough and matter-of-fact touch that he developed while making documentary films in the fierce battlefields of World War II. This film, which Huston himself adapted from a novel by B. Traven (1882-1969), won the Academy Award for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor. Huston won two awards, and he and his father Walter Huston also achieved the feat of being the first father-son duo to win awards.
