〘Noun〙① A segaki memorial service held in a river to pray for the repose of the souls of those who have drowned. It is often performed by rowing out into the river and erecting a stupa in the water, or by writing the posthumous name of the deceased on a wooden or paper item and throwing it into the river to offer prayers for the deceased. It is often performed around the time of Obon, and is said to have originated from Nagarekanjo . 〘名〙① 水死した人の冥福を祈って、川で行なう施餓鬼供養。多くは川に漕ぎ出し、塔婆を水中に立て、あるいは経木、紙などに死者の法名を記し、河中に投げるなどして回向する。盆の頃多く行なわれ、流灌頂(ながれかんじょう)に起因するものという。《季・秋》※雑俳・蓍萩(1735)「経文に水かけ合の川施餓鬼」※黄表紙・憎口返答返(1780)「屋形舟を借りて川施餓鬼とやら」② 難産で死んだ産婦をとむらうこと。流灌頂から転じたもの。※俳諧・類船集(1676)世「難産して身まかりたるを川せがきといふ事をすとかや」
