1546‐1622 A Huayan monk from the late Ming Dynasty in China. His pen name was Chengyin, and his pen name was Hanshan. He was from Quanjiao, Anhui Province. He entered the Zen sect at an early age, and later became a leading figure in the theory of the unity of Zen and Buddhism. He had a close friendship with the great contemporary monk Zhibo Zhenke. At the age of 50, he was exiled to Caoxi, an area associated with Huineng, where he restored the old site and devoted himself to social activities, earning him the respect of the scholar-officials. He also lived in Lushan, but returned to Caoxi and passed away. In addition to the inner scriptures, he also wrote about apocryphal works such as The Great Learning and The Doctrine of the Mean.
