Shinzo Kawai

Japanese: 河合新蔵 - かわいしんぞう

1867-1936 A Western-style painter from the Meiji to early Showa period.
Born on May 27, 1867. Studied under Goseda Horyu and later studied at Koyama Shotaro's Fudosha. Studied in America and France, and participated in the establishment of the Japan Watercolor Association Research Institute in 1906. He later became active in the Kansai art world. Died on February 15, 1936, at the age of 70. Born in Osaka. His pen name was Mugai. His works include "Poplars and Summer Mandarins".

慶応3年5月27日生まれ。五姓田芳柳(ごせだ-ほうりゅう)に師事,のち小山正太郎の不同舎にまなぶ。アメリカ,フランスに留学し,明治39年日本水彩画会研究所設立に参加。のち関西画壇で活躍した。昭和11年2月15日死去。70歳。大坂出身。号は無涯。作品に「ポプラーと夏蜜柑(みかん)」など。
