Bunkyu Coup, also known as the August 18 Coup. This incident occurred on August 18, 1863 (Bunkyu 3), when the faction that united the Imperial Court and the Shogunate expelled the Sonno-Joi faction, which had been in the ascendancy until then, from Kyoto and seized real power. The Sonno-Joi faction, centered around the Choshu faction, planned to use Emperor Komei's visit to Yamato as an opportunity to support the Emperor and launch an anti-shogunate army. Upon learning of this, Shimazu Hisamitsu and others from the Satsuma Kagoshima Domain joined forces with the Mutsu Aizu Domain and Prince Nakagawa (Prince Asahiko) and other factions of the Imperial Court that united the Imperial Court and the Shogunate, suddenly surrounding the Imperial Palace with troops, halting the visit and expelling the Sonno-Joi nobles and patriots. This incident overturned the dominance of the Choshu faction as the core of the Sonno-Joi movement, and the Tenchu-gumi, which was supposed to have risen up in response to the visit to Yamato, was isolated and annihilated. → The Fall of the Seven Nobles / The Kinmon Incident → Related topics: Sakamoto Ryoma | Sanjo Sanetomi | Sonno Joi Movement | Takechi Zuizan | Tenguto Rebellion | Totsukawa Incident | Hirano Kuniomi | Maki Izumi | Meiji Restoration Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
