A city in southeastern Saitama prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies the alluvial lowlands of the Old Tone River and Motoarakawa River basins. The city center, which sits on the natural levee of Motoarakawa River, developed in the early modern period as a post town and market town on the Nikko Kaido road. It is served by the Tobu Railway Isesaki Line, the JR Musashino Line, and National Route 4, and has many small and medium-sized factories producing electrical equipment, metals, and general machinery. The population has also grown rapidly. In rural areas, floriculture and greenhouse horticulture are thriving. Kamonuma, the Imperial Household Agency's Saitama hunting ground, is located on the left bank of the Motoarakawa River. It is the permanent home of the Japanese collared pigeon (a natural monument) which lives only in this vicinity in the entire country. It has an area of 60.24 km2 and a population of 326,313 (2010).
