The language of carnival

...This "dialogical positioning" of language is found between different utterances within the same linguistic domain, between different "social languages" within the same national language domain, and finally between different national languages within the domain of the same culture, the same social and ideological perspective. Genres of prose are formed by the organization of such various heterogeneous languages, and Bakhtin sees its archetype in the "language of carnival," in which official normative utterances are mixed and inverted with the slang of the people, and in which the various voices of the people in the square, such as the chanting and calls of street performers, are given form, and furthermore, sees its artistic expression in the works of Rabelais and Dostoevsky. Bakhtin's works were introduced to Western Europe in the mid-1960s, and served as a catalyst for liberating the study of prose from the narrow framework of modern novels in one fell swoop.
