The capital of the Charente-Maritime department in western France. Population 74,000 (1990). A seaport city facing the Atlantic Ocean, it developed as a major commercial center in the Middle Ages, trading with the Hanseatic League and Dutch traders. Politically, it enjoyed a great deal of autonomy, even though it was embroiled in a dispute between the English and French royal families. It was originally part of the Duchy of Aquitaine, but in 1152, Eleanor, the heir to the Duchy of Aquitaine, remarried Henry of the Plantagenet family, and in 1154 Henry became King of England (the first Plantagenet dynasty, Henry II).
