Carneades - Karneades (English spelling)

A skeptical Greek philosopher from Cyrene. He founded the New Academy. He was the strongest critic of Stoicism as dogmatism. The Stoics established perception as the standard of truth, but there must be many false perceptions, just as a rod in water looks bent. He therefore proposed an understanding of "what can be plausibly believed" to guide actions, and instead of the standard of truth and knowledge, he established three levels of certainty that arouse our consent. He also criticized the Stoic view of God, based on the fact that there is evil and misery in the world, and defended freedom against its fatalism.

キレネ出身の古代ギリシアの懐疑派の哲学者。新アカデメイアを設立した。ストア派を独断論としてもっとも強く批判した。ストア派は真理の基準として把握表象をたてたが、水中の棒は曲がって見えるごとく誤った表象も多いはずである。そこで彼は行為を導くために「もっともらしく信じられること」の理解を提出し、真理基準と知識のかわりに、われわれの同意を呼び起こす3段階の確信を据えた。また世界に悪と悲惨のある事実から、ストア学派の神観を批判し、その運命論に対して自由を擁護した。
