The prototype of the greenhouse was built in Renaissance gardens to nurture orange and citron trees, prized as Oriental plants, during the cold season. Many of them had large windows, and fruit trees were placed in wooden boxes or terracotta pots for easy transportation, and heated by fire. They first appeared in Italy in the late 15th century and spread throughout Europe, with some also functioning as rooms to enjoy the pleasant aroma of fruit trees, and in Germany they were used as music venues and small theaters.
