A ship that operates on a specific route according to pre-published freight rates and operating schedules is called a liner, while a ship that operates on any route at any time according to the shipper's request is called a tramper. The transport demand for maritime trade cargo is heterogeneous, but the demands that they place on shipping services can be broadly divided into two categories. Finished goods, semi-finished goods, fresh food, high-value goods, etc. have a high unit price compared to their weight or volume, so the proportion of freight charges in their acquisition price is small, and therefore the ability to bear the freight charges is high.

あらかじめ公表された運賃と運航スケジュールに従って特定航路に就航する船舶を定期船(ライナーliner)と呼び，荷主の求めに応じてどの航路にでも随時就航する船舶を不定期船(トランパーtramper)と呼ぶ。　海上貿易貨物の輸送需要はそれぞれ異質な内容を示すが，これらが海運サービスに求める要求の内容は大きく二つに分けられる。製品，半製品，生鮮食料品，高額商品などは，重量または容積に比べて単位当り価格が高いことから，その取得価格に占める運賃の割合が小さく，そのため運賃負担力が大きい。
