Gansu Corridor (English: Gansu Corridor)

Japanese: 甘粛回廊 - かんしゅくかいろう（英語表記）Gān sù huí láng

A corridor-like plain about 1000km long and several to 100km wide, located in northwest Gansu Province, China, between the southern edge mountain range of the Mongolian Plateau in the north and the Qilian Mountains in the south. Also known as the Hexi Corridor. Desert stretches to the west. Since ancient times, it has been an important transportation route between mainland China and the Western Regions, linking oases, and has been ruled by Chinese dynasties, Tibet, and other ethnic groups. Today, railways and highways run through the area, wheat and cotton are cultivated through irrigation, petroleum and iron ore are produced, and large windbreak and sand-prevention forests can be seen. 中国，甘粛省北西部，北のモンゴル高原南縁山地と南の祁連（きれん）山脈の間，長さ約1000km，幅数km～100kmの廊下状の平地。別名河西回廊。西部に砂漠がひろがる。古来，オアシスを結んでの中国本土～西域間の重要な交通路で，中国王朝やチベットその他の諸民族の支配をうけた。今日，鉄道や公路が走り，灌漑による小麦･綿花栽培，石油･鉄鉱石の産出，大規模な防風防砂林帯などがみられる。【小野菊雄】
