Chikushi. ※Man'yoshu (late 8th century) 5.866 "The province of Tsukushi, separated by a thousand layers of white clouds, seems so far away" [Additional notes] In the Chikugo no Kuni Fudoki Itobun, included in the Shaku Nihongi, there are three stories about the origin of the name Tsukushi Province: (i) the steep slope of the mountain on the border between Chikuzen and Chikugo was called "shitakurazukushi no saka" , (ii) the fierce god living on the mountain was called "no ikizukushi no kami", and (iii) the mountain was called "yama no kizukushi" ("trees of the mountain are exhausted"), because of the coffins used to bury the dead on the mountain. 古く、九州地方の称。九州地方全体を指す場合、九州の北半、肥の国・豊国を合わせた地方を指す場合、筑前・筑後を指す場合、筑前国、もしくは大宰府を指す場合などがある。つくのくに。ちくし。※万葉(8C後)五・八六六「遙遙(はろばろ)に思ほゆるかも白雲の千重に隔てる都久紫(ツクシ)の国は」[補注]「釈日本紀」所収の筑後国風土記逸文には、筑紫国号に関し、(イ)筑前・筑後の境にある山の急な坂を鞍韉(したくら)尽しの坂といったところから、(ロ)その山に住むあらぶる神を命尽の神といったところから、(ハ)その山における死者を葬る棺のために「山の木尽さむ」としたところから、とツクシ(尽)の義からとする語源説話をあげている。
