The Spanish Audiencia was a high court of justice established in Spain and its colonies. In the colonies, however, it had great powers not only in the judicial system but also in the legislative and administrative aspects, and became the central institution of colonial governance. The jurisdiction of the Audiencia became the basis for the independent Latin American countries in the early 19th century.
