Director and theorist Lev Kuleshov (1899-1970) believed that "montage is the dramaturgy of film," while Pudovkin emphasized that montage is the "connection" of cuts, while Eisenstein, on the other hand, argued that the essence of montage is not the "connection" of cuts but the "clash" of cuts. Thus, the theory of montage developed from a theory of film technique to a theory of art.
