In the Edo period, this referred to the act of severing family ties with a missing relative. It was done to avoid legal and social consequences that could be incurred from a missing misbehaving relative, but was mainly practiced among common people. Parents, older brothers, uncles, and other superiors could sever ties with their children, younger brothers, nephews, and other subordinates, but the opposite was not permitted for a subordinate to sever ties with a superior, which was called "reverse severance." Just like disownment (also called oidashikuri), if it was done verbally or in writing, the disownment was a so-called internal disownment and had no legal effect. It only became valid after going through the proper procedures, having it recorded by the magistrate and receiving a certified copy of it. If the disowned person later repented and changed their behavior, the person who requested the disownment could request that it be annulled.
