Saint Benedict, founder of Western monasticism from about 480 to 550. Little is known about his life. Born to a noble family in Nursia, near Spoleto in central Italy, he went to Rome around 500 to study law, but was shocked by the decadence of the ancient city and became a hermit, first studying in a cave in Afile and then in Subiaco. He also built 12 monasteries in the area for the monks who gathered around him and provided guidance for them. In about 529 he moved to Monte Cassino (Monte Cassino Abbey) and never left there. In his later years, after 534, he wrote his only work, the Rule of Benedict. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
