The light of a distant star is somewhat reddish due to absorption by interstellar matter, and its color index increases. This increase is called color excess, and can be calculated by subtracting the standard color index corresponding to the star's spectral type from the observed color index. This allows us to estimate the amount of absorbing material in space in that direction.
