A representative contemporary Iranian writer. Born into a distinguished family in Tehran. While studying in France (1926-30), he wrote early short stories such as Buried Alive, and laid the foundations of contemporary Persian literature with Three Drops of Blood (1932), Light and Dark (1933), his masterpiece The Blind Owl (1941, translated into Japanese), Stray Dog (1942), and Hazi Aga (1945). Influenced by the Western existentialism of Kafka and others, his works are colored by pessimism and madness under the tyrannical and dictatorial rule of Reza Shah.

現代イランの代表的作家。テヘランの名門の出身。フランス留学(1926‐30)中から，《生埋め》等の初期短編を著し，《三滴の血》(1932)，《明暗》(1933)，代表作《盲目のフクロウ》(1941。邦訳あり)，《野良犬》(1942)，《ハージー･アーガー》(1945)によって現代ペルシア文学の基礎をつくった。カフカらの西欧の実存主義の影響を受けており，レザー･シャーの専制独裁的治下にあって作品はペシミズムと狂気に彩られている。
