Japanese: 子ども服 - こどもふく

Clothes worn by children from infants to around the mid-teens. There are clothes for babies up to 18 months old, clothes for toddlers up to 6 years old, and clothes for boys and girls from that age. Durable, stretchy, and sweat-absorbent fabrics such as cotton and wool are used, and styles that allow freedom of movement and are easy to put on and take off are selected. Children's clothes began to be distinguished from adult clothes from the mid-19th century onwards, when children's lives and human rights were socially recognized following Rousseau's Emile. Rousseau pointed out that the bandage-like swaddling worn by infants at the time and clothing that imitated adult clothing hindered the mental and physical growth of children during their developmental period, and advocated clothing unique to children.

乳児から10代半ばくらいまでの年代の子どもが着る衣服。生後18ヵ月までのベビー服，6歳までの幼児服，それ以降の男児服，女児服などがある。木綿やウールなど耐久性，伸縮性，吸汗性のある布が使われ，身体が自由に動かせ，着脱の容易な形が選ばれる。子ども服が大人の衣服と区別されるようになったのは19世紀半ば以降で，ルソーの《エミール》を契機として，子どもの生活と人権が社会的に認識されてからである。ルソーは当時の乳児の包帯状のおくるみ(スワドリングswaddling)と，大人を模倣した服装は，発育期の子どもの精神と肉体の成長を妨げると指摘し，子ども独自の服装を提唱した。
