A peace treaty concluded between Persia and Athens in 450 BC with the aim of ending the Persian Wars. According to Diodorus, after the Persian army was defeated by the Greek army on the island of Cyprus, the Persian king Artaxerxes I sent an envoy to Athens to ask for peace. Athens responded by sending a wealthy Athenian, Callias, as an ambassador plenipotentiary, and the following four points were agreed upon between the two countries: (1) recognition of the autonomy of the Greek nations in Asia, (2) Persian non-interference in the affairs of Ionian cities within three days' sail from the coast, (3) prohibition of Persian fleets from invading the area west of the Bosphorus Strait in Paseoli (Asia Minor), and (4) non-violation of Persian territory in Athens. However, there are various ancient traditions regarding the contents of this peace treaty, and it is unclear whether the treaty itself actually existed or not. For example, Thucydides makes no mention of the treaty, the historian Theopompus, who wrote about Greek history after 411 BC, called it a forgery, and even today there are many who deny its authenticity.
