A high-end clothing store that developed in Paris, France, that designs and tailors clothing. It is known for the originality of its designs, advanced techniques, and high prices. The name originates from Rose Bertin, known as the court designer for Marie Antoinette, queen of Louis XVI, who set up a store there from 1773 until the French Revolution, making clothes for aristocratic women. However, modern haute couture began with the Englishman C. F. Worth, who opened a store in Paris in 1858 and became the designer for Empress Eugénie, empress of Napoleon III.
