Kita Toji

...During the Ryakuo era (1338-42), Ashikaga Takauji invited Muso Soseki to be the temple's founder, and the temple was founded at its current location at the foot of Kinugasayama Mountain. Takauji's younger brother, Tadayoshi, also built a temple of the same name, Toji-ji (also called Toji-in), at Sanjo-bomon in the capital, so the temple was also called "Kita Toji" during the Muromachi period to distinguish it from the others. In 1358 (Shohei 13, Enbun 3), Takauji was buried at the temple, and thereafter the funerals of successive Ashikaga shoguns were held here, and it became their mausoleum, and the statues and memorial tablets of successive shoguns were enshrined within the temple. ...

…暦応年間(1338‐42)足利尊氏が夢窓疎石を開山に招請して，衣笠山山麓の現在地に開創。尊氏の弟の直義も同じ寺名の等持寺(等持院とも呼ぶ)を洛中の三条坊門に建てたので，区別して室町時代には〈北等持〉とも呼ばれた。1358年(正平13∥延文3)尊氏は当寺に葬られ，以後，歴代足利将軍の葬送が行われ，その廟所となり，また寺内に将軍歴代の像や位牌がまつられることとなった。…
