The capital of American Samoa in Polynesia, South Pacific. It is located at the head of Pago Pago Bay, on the southeast coast of Tutuila Island. Pago Pago is actually the name of the bay and a village on the bay. The United States formally acquired Eastern Samoa in 1899 for the purpose of building a naval base here, as it is a good natural harbor. For about half a century, it prospered as a military port, but after World War II, its strategic necessity disappeared, and today it is a base for deep-sea fishing and has a fish cannery operated by major American capital. Since the days of the naval port, the area around the bay has become the central city of American Samoa, with the government office, commercial center, hospital, library, and hotels concentrated there, and it is home to more than 10,000 people, more than one-third of the island's population.
