Tokin (Hood)

Japanese: 兜巾(頭巾) - ときん
Tokin (Hood)
Also written as "Toueki." A pointed circular headgear worn by ascetic monks on the forehead, it is made of lacquered cloth, wood, or resin. It is thought to have originated as a head hood for protection and protection from the cold. According to sources such as Shugen Shuyo Hiketsushu, the jeweled crown-shaped helmet hood is likened to the jeweled crown of the Five Wisdoms of Dainichi Nyorai, the black color representing worldly desires, and the folds representing the twelve causal factors, and it is said that the ordinary and the holy are one, and that the wearer is one and the same as Dainichi Nyorai and Acala. Instead of a helmet hood, some people use a jeweled crown that wraps the head in white bleached cotton and hangs on either side of the face.
