The insect brain (supraesophageal ganglion) consists of two hemispheres, divided into anterior, middle, and posterior cerebrum. The dorsal anterior part of the protocerebrum is called the intercerebral pars intermedius. The ophthalmic nerves emerge from here, and a large number of neurosecretory cells are distributed there. Those close to the midline are called medial neurosecretory cells, and those close to the anterior edge of the protocerebrum are called lateral neurosecretory cells (NC). In the cecropia pupa, there are 6 types of cells, 4 types in the center and 2 types on the sides, for a total of 36 cells, and in Orthoptera, the number reaches several hundred.

昆虫の脳(食道上神経節)は左右両半球から成り，前･中･後大脳にわけられる。このうち前大脳の背側前方部を脳間部という。ここからは単眼神経が出るとともに，神経分泌細胞が数多く分布している。正中線に近いものを中央神経分泌細胞medial neurosecretory cell，前大脳前縁に近いものを側神経分泌細胞lateral n.c.という。セクロピアサンのさなぎでは，中央部に4タイプ，側方に2タイプの計6タイプ36細胞があり，直翅（ちよくし）類ではその数は数百にのぼる。
