This was the private residence of Fujiwara no Nakamaro in the late Nara period. It was first seen here when Empress Kōken used it as her residence on her way back from the ceremony to consecrate the eyes of the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple in April 752 (4th year of Tenpyō-shōhō) (Shoku Nihongi). Later, Nakamaro supported Prince Ōi as the crown prince and arranged for Awata Moroe, the wife of his late son Masatsugu, to live in the residence, so it was also called Tamura Palace. The Shoku Nihongi records that Emperor Kōnin held a drinking party at the former Tamura Palace after the Emi no Oshikatsu Rebellion, and that Emperor Kanmu visited the Tamura Palace of the then Minister of the Right, Fujiwara no Korekimi (Nakamaro's nephew).
