A family of fish in the order Characidae. Most are less than 3 cm long, but some can reach up to 1 m. They are found in southwest Texas, Mexico, and Central and South America. They are similar in appearance to the Cyprinidae, but have well-developed teeth in their jaws and an adipose fin. They include many ornamental fish, such as the neon tetra.
