Characidae; characins
A family of fish in the order Characidae. Most are less than 3 cm long, but some can reach up to 1 m. They are found in southwest Texas, Mexico, and Central and South America. They are similar in appearance to the Cyprinidae, but have well-developed teeth in their jaws and an adipose fin. They include many ornamental fish, such as the neon tetra.

魚類の分類,カラシン目の一科。多くは体長 3cm以下であるが,1mぐらいになるものもある。アメリカ合衆国テキサス州南西部,メキシコ,中央・南アメリカに分布する。外形はコイ目コイ科 Cyprinidaeに似ているが,顎に歯が発達しており,脂鰭をもっている。ネオンテトラなど数多くの観賞魚を含む。
