Uji Wabun

Japanese: 宇治倭文 - うじわぶん

...The name of the head of the Icchu-bushi Uji school. (1) First generation (1791-1858, Kansei 3-Ansei 5) Katsuta Gonzaemon, headman of Asakusa Zaimokucho. He was a disciple of Sugano Joyu, the second head of the Icchu-bushi Sugano school, and switched to the Miyako school as Miyako Ikkansai. In 1849 (Kaei 2), he founded the Uji school and took the name Uji Shibunsai. He composed new works with his wife Wabun and established the foundations. As a kyoka poet, he took the name Chikusaan Moroji. (2) Second generation (1821-79, Bunsei 4-Meiji 12) Fukutaro, the biological son of the first generation. His first name was Uji Shiho. After retirement, he was called Kansai-o. (3) Third generation (1834-1903, Tenpo 5-Meiji 36) Former vassal of the shogunate. ...

...It is strongly influenced by Itchu-bushi, but it is a completely different piece from (4). (4) Itchu-bushi: Composed by Uji Wabun I in 1854 (Ansei 1). It was originally composed in conjunction with Kato-bushi, composed by Yamahiko Kawaryo 5th, but the Kato-bushi has disappeared, and it is now composed in conjunction with a koto song said to be composed by a woman under the tutelage of Yamada Kengyo.
