An ancient checkpoint located in Ise Province (near Sekimachi, Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture). It is one of the three checkpoints, along with Fuwa Checkpoint in Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture) and Arachi Checkpoint in Echizen Province (Fukui Prefecture). It was probably established in response to the Taika Reforms Imperial Edict of 646 (Taika 2), which states, "Establish checkpoints, scouts, and defenders." In 672 (Emperor Tenmu 1), an envoy from Suzuka Checkpoint made a petition. In 709 (Wado 2), when Fujiwara Fusasaki inspected the checkpoints on both the Tokai and Tozan roads, Ise no Kami was praised. Kogenshi were dispatched to important national events, such as the death of Emperor Genmei. In July 789 (Enryaku 8), the Sankan were abolished, but the dispatch of Kokukanshi was still carried out for ceremonial purposes. It is known from sources such as the Azuma Kagami that checkpoints were established during the Kamakura period. During the Edo period, it was one of the fifty-three stations along the Tokaido road.
