A Shingon Buddhist monk from the early Heian period. A native of Kyoto. His real name was Onakatomi Masamune. He became a chamberlain, but after the death of his second elder brother, he became a monk together with his nephew Kunio (Teishin). Following the precepts of Yakushi-ji Temple, he received the ordination in 835 or 836. From then on, he continued to recite the Diamond Sutra. He learned esoteric Buddhism from Shinnyo at Todai-ji Temple, and became the head priest of Chosho-ji Temple in Nara, which Shinnyo founded. He was instrumental in helping Empress Dowager Fujiwara Junshi and Grand Minister Fujiwara Yoshifusa recover from illness, and in 865 he was directly appointed as Gon Sojo. He was selfless and had no fixed place of residence, living in the city and on a boat, but was given land by an elderly woman, and with Yoshifusa's assistance, he built Sojo-ji Temple in Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture) in 866. He passed away on a boat the following year, and a memorial service was held at Yakushi-ji Temple. His posthumous name was Jizai.

平安前期の真言宗僧。京都の人。俗名は大中臣正棟。内舎人となったが,2兄の死にあい甥の国雄(定進)と共に出家。薬師寺の戒明に従い,承和2(835)年または3年に受戒。以後『金剛般若経』の読誦を続けた。東大寺の真如から密教を学び,真如の創建した奈良・超昇寺の座主となる。皇太后藤原順子,太政大臣藤原良房の病気平癒に功があり,貞観7(865)年に権僧正に直任された。無欲で居所を一定せず,市井や船に身を寄せたが,一老女から土地を与えられ,良房の援助を受けて同8年,山城(京都府)に相応寺を建立した。翌年,船上で遷化し,薬師寺で供養が行われた。諡は慈済。
